Metals to treat cancer?

A successful collaboration between chemists and biologists has identified the action of a new class of molecules, polyoxometalates, mainly composed of metals and oxygen. These molecules inhibit specifically and in a very powerful way the protein kinase CK2, a hyperactivated enzyme in many cancers. The crucial role of this enzyme in controling the proliferation and cell survival makes it an important target for drug discovery.
