Research projects
In my team we are actively working on the design of biomimetic materials that have similar physical and chemical properties to the extracellular matrix of human tissues. Our projects to date have mainly focused on understanding the impact of growth factor presentation by extracellular matrix components, in particular glycosaminoglycans, on cellular adhesion and signalling. My vision now is to expand the potential applications of our biomimetic materials from basic to applied studies. We are moving towards using these biomaterials to find treatment strategies for diseases such as cancer and rare diseases. I expect to demonstrate in the near future that these biomimetic materials are a great alternative to standard cell culture in Petri dishes to obtain realistic cellular responses in vitro, including responses to drugs.
